In this play, A1 shoots the ball. The ball bounces off the front of the rim high above the rim in the cylinder above the basket. A2 jumps and puts the palms of both hands against the ring. A2 does not grab the ring, pull it down, or cause the backboard to vibrate. Please select from the choices below what the proper ruling is.
A. Since A2 did not grab the ring, pull it down, or cause the backboard to vibrate, no violation has occurred and play will continue as normal.
B. Call a technical foul since A2 made contact with the rim. Team B will be awarded two free throws and the ball at mid-court after the free throws.
C. Call a basket interference violation on A2 immediately canceling the shot and awarding Team B the ball along the baseline for a designated spot throw in.
D. Call A2 for for touching the rim and go to the Alternating Possession throw in since there was no team control since the shot was in the air and no player had control of it.
Rule 4.6.1 states that Basket Interference occurs when a player touches the ball or any part of the basket (including the net) while the ball is on or "within" either basket. The term "within" does NOT include the cylinder, but rather refers to the ball beginning to pass through the ring.
Furthermore, rule 4.6.2 states basket interference also occurs when a player touches the ball while any part of the ball is within the imaginary cylinder which has the basket ring as its lower base. Therefore, the correct answer in the scenario above should have been A, no violation and allow play to continue as normal.
