Rule 10-1-3 states a team shall not use television monitoring or replay equipment or computers (other than for statistics) for coaching purposes during the game or any intermission or use a megaphone or any mechanical sounding device or any electronic transmission device at courtside for coaching purposes, or electronic equipment for voice communication with players.
Please read through the following case plays and decide what the proper ruling is.
Team A's coach: (a) uses a megaphone or an electronic amplifier to shout instructions to players; (b) is in contact with an assistant coach in the press box via a headset; or (c) is in direct contact with one or more -players via electronic voice communication. Is this legal? Ruling: A team technical is charged in (a), (b) and (c). The team technical counts toward reaching the bonus, but is not charged to the head coach. In (a), the use of a rolled up program would be legal. The penalty is two free throws plus ball for division-line throw-in.
One of the teams has an IPAD or similar Tablet on the bench and the team is using it to (a) record statistics of the game; or (b) show team members plays during the game. Ruling: Legal in (a) but illegal in (b). The use of computers to records statistics is legal but it cannot be used for any other purpose. In (b), use preventive officiating and tell them to stop using it for showing plays and to only use it for statistical purposes. If they continue to use it for anything other than statistics, then charge them with a team technical that counts toward reaching the bonus, but is not charged to the head coach.
