This week's rule is going to focus on different scenarios during the end of the game and whether or not you continue the game with overtime. Please read through each scenario and determine what you think the ruling should be. The ruling for each scenario will be at the end of each section.
Scenario 1
A1 is fouled in the act of shooting and while the ball is in flight, time in the 4th quarter expires. A1 is awarded two free throws. The score is Team B 62, Team A 60. A1 misses the first free throw. What do you do next?
The proper ruling is to end the game. No free throws shall be attempted after time has expired for the fourth quarter or any extra period, unless the point(s) would affect the outcome of the game.
Scenario 2
After time has expired to end the 4th quarter, A1 taunts B1 and a technical foul is assessed. The score is tied. What is the correct procedure for administering the technical foul to determine whether or not overtime will be played?
The proper ruling is to begin the first overtime with Team B shooting two free throws for the technical foul assessed against A1. Rule 5.6.2.4 states if a technical foul occurs after the ball has become dead to end a quarter or extra period, the next quarter or extra period is started by administering the free throws. The overtime period is then started with a jump ball as, according to Case Book Scenario 5.6 Comment B, the division line throw-in following the technical foul cannot be carried over to the overtime as the fourth quarter has ended.
Scenario 3
After time has expired to end the 4th quarter, A1 taunts B1 and a technical foul is assessed. The score is Team A-61, Team B-60. What is the correct procedure for administering the technical foul to determine whether or not overtime will be played?
The proper ruling is to end the 4th quarter with Team B shooting two free throws for the technical foul assessed against A1 as this is an exception to the rule cited in Scenario 2 since the score is not tied. There is no way to determine whether there will be an extra period until the free throws are administered. The free throws are attempted immediately, as if the foul had been part of the 4th quarter. If only one free throw is successful, an extra period is played and the overtime period is started with a jump ball. If neither or if both free throws are successful, the game is over.
